Saturday, August 14: We pulled out of the Peaceful Pines Campground about 7:45 AM and headed west once again. The terrain of Washington state changed to dry and flat for a couple of hours.
We stopped for a coffee break at a scenic turn out that overlooked the Columbia River. The views from up on that bluff were fantastic. We have plans to return to the Columbia River farther west later on in our travels.
After about 2/3 of the way the mountains began to loom up ahead. We stopped at a rest area that gave us some great close up footage of a few of the many windmills we had seen dotting the hillsides. We could see the snow covered top of Mt. Ranier in the distance.
We hopefully got some good GoPro footage out the front window of the drive through the mountains.
The last 15 or so miles were very slow going with several backups due to road construction. My phone range and it was the Avis Car Rental office we were heading to saying the car we had reserved didn't show up as planned from their distribution center. He did say he had some other types of cars so we headed there anyway and were OK with Hyundai Santa Fe Cruiser they had available. We left the camper at the Avis office while we grabbed a quick lunch. Then I followed Jim in the new rental car about 17 miles to the Riverbend Campground. Since I had made the camping reservations many months ago we were in site A-1! We also noted this was another campground where we will be serenaded with train whistles. I am glad they do not keep me awake!
After getting the camper hooked up, we left for a few hours. A Cabelas store was just 8 miles away so I figured that would be a good treat for my hard working driver. Now the motor home gets an 8 day rest and we can drive something a lot easier to manuver around.
If you can sleep through dad's snoring, train whistles are a piece of cake ;-) you'd be surprised how much we hear trains even by our house. But it was even more so when we lived in LaGrange.
